What Are the Causes For Sweating Excessively?

By Danielle L. Taylor

Sweating is the body’s natural way of releasing toxins in the body. It is a cleansing process. However, excessive sweating is a different matter and according to most medical experts, it is generally genetic. This means if one of your parents tend to sweat a lot, and you do too, then you probably inherited the gene.

There are two categories of excessive sweating which is the generalized hyperhidrosis which means you tend to release sweat all over your body; then there is the focal hyperhidrosis which focuses on jut one part like your hands or feet.

The usual cause would be too much activity in your sympathetic nervous system. This is the part of the body that controls your sweat glands and is responsible for our automatic reflexes. For instance, when faced with a dangerous situation, we tend to sweat because our nervous system tells us we are at risk. Thus, we cannot control the way our sweat glands works nor the amount of sweat it produces.

Unfortunately, there is no way you can cure this because it is genetic. It can be addressed by using certain products and avoiding stressful situations. For instance, your doctor could prescribe oral medication and strong antiperspirants. You can also consider Botox or should the problem be extraordinary, laparoscopic surgery. However, before assuming that you suffer excessive sweating because of your parents’ genes, there are other factors that can be examined.

Aside from the genetic factor, you can also suffer from excessive sweating because of hormonal changes, aging, obesity, certain kinds of cancer, diabetes, and hyperthyroidism, among others.

Teenagers or women who are going through menopause tend to sweat more than they normally do. This is related to the changes in the body and will cease once the person passes that stage. Obesity is a common cause for sweating because of the weight being carried around and the effort it takes to move. This is a problem that can be solved more easily, medically speaking, although it may not necessarily be emotionally or physically easier. Obviously, there are sensitive issues that have to be addressed when dealing with excessive sweating due to obesity.

If you are bothered by excessive sweating, it could affect your relationship with others and cause you to withdraw from people. What you need to understand is that you are doing nothing to cause this if your problem is genetic. It is a problem, but it can be solved with the right kind of treatment. Your first step should be to consult a doctor and explain your situation. You can expect to go through a series of diagnostic tests before treatment can be addressed.

Hoping that you will outgrow excessive sweating is possible if you experienced it only recently. If you have had it as long as you can remember, then the chances are slim that it will stop happening on its own. Nevertheless, there are solutions to excessive sweating. Just remember that what may work for one person, may not necessarily be the perfect product for you.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

By Ian G Williamson

A question that quite often gets asked about sweating related disorders is “what is hyperhidrosis?”. This article will answer that question and give some related information about the condition and it’s symptoms. It will also give some advice on how to treat the condition (or where treatment is not an option it will give advice on how to make allowances for living with the condition).

Hyperhidrosis, also commonly known as excessive sweating, is a medical condition that causes people to perspire in uncharacteristically profuse amounts even in cool temperatures. While this affliction can affect any part of the human body, the most common areas are the hands, armpit, and feet due to the increased amounts of sweat glands in those areas. Hyperhidrosis is most often caused by an overactive sympathetic nervous system in the body. This system is part of the body’s autonomous control of blood pressure, heart rate, reactions to external conditions and many other functions.

The severity of this condition can be categorized by the amount of skin that is affected. With this method of categorization, excessive sweating in an area more than 100 cm2 in any part of the body is categorized differently from excessive sweating in a localized area. The second method is by determining if the condition was inherited or acquired. Inherited conditions are characterized as primary Hyperhidrosis and can be found to show symptoms during adolescence. Conditions that are acquired through pituitary gland disorders, such as hyperthyroidism, or caused by biological changes such as menopause are categorized as secondary hyperhidrosis. Symptoms can appear at any point in life.

There are a few methods of combating hyperhidrosis, among which are medication and surgery. Botox

The causes of excessive sweating can be many but let’s firstly look at what happens when excessive sweating occurs. When excessive sweating takes place your sympathetic nervous system becomes extremely active. For those who suffer from ‘hyperhidrosis’ the sympathetic nervous system goes beyond a high activity level and into overdrive.

Since the cause of the underarm odor is the bacteria it makes sense that if we reduce the amount of sweat then we can prevent the bacteria that depend on it. Since antiperspirants are able to reduce excessive sweating they must be the answer — right? No. Antiperspirants have their limitations and draw-backs.

These are some approaches to over sweating: Over-the-counter antiperspirants — usually tried first because they are readily available. Antiperspirants containing aluminum chloride (for example Certain-Dri) may be more effective when other antiperspirants have failed. Medication taken orally. Certain medications that reduce sweating by affecting the nerves may be recommended. Side effects associated with these medications include dry mouth constipation increased heart rate urinary difficulties and blurry vision.

Excessive sweating can be very distressing and is socially embarrassing. It can lead to social or psychological withdawl interferes with the grasping of objects and can affect writing on paper. Palmar hyperhidrosis (sweaty palms) is the most common form and usually the most socially disturbing. Plantar hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of the soles of the feet) can lead to upleasant smells friction blisters infection and can shorten the life of socks and shoes. Axillary hyperhidrosis can be embarrassing and ruin clothing.

Hyperhidrosis is a genetic condition that affects mostly the hands feet or underarms. Everyone sweats to some extent. This is an important process to help the body to control its temperature and hydrate the skin. In Hyperhidrosis the brain over stimulates the glands that are responsible for sweating. It is common for it to run in families and up to one third of people have another member of the family affected.

Discover How You Can Treat & Prevent Excessive Facial Sweating!

If you suffer from excessive facial sweating, then you know how embarrassing it can be. On other parts of the body, sweat isn’t too difficult to hide. It’s impossible to hide excessive face sweat. It may also be difficult to treat – especially if you’re not even sure what’s causing it!

Treating it isn’t impossible. Even if you can’t figure out what’s causing it, you can still try some herbal remedies and antiperspirant products designed for facial use. You can also modify your diet and eliminate foods that trigger the sweat glands.

If you want to “cure” excessive facial sweating, you may have to go to the doctor and find out what’s causing it. Excessive perspiration could be a symptom of another medical condition, in which case you would have to get appropriate treatment for that condition in order to cure the facial sweating. It could also be a condition itself, known as hyperhidrosis. Severe cases of hyperhidrosis include overactive sweat glands, which can only be treated with surgery.

Here are some other possible causes of excessive facial sweating:

Thyroidism
Leukemia
Diabetes
Arthritis
Obesity
Depression
Anxiety disorder
High blood pressure
Substance abuse
Unhealthy diet
Allergies
Side-effects of certain medications

Some of these you can control yourself. If you eat an unhealthy diet, for instance, you can start eating healthier to prevent sweating. If you have a substance abuse problem, getting help for it and cutting down it will keep you from sweating so much.

You can gain some control over your excessive facial sweating if you try the following tips:

There are some antiperspirant wipes that can be used on the face. Check and see if your local pharmacy sells them. If so, then start carrying a few around with you wherever you go. In addition to these wipes, you can also carry around oil-blotting sheets. Sometimes an oily face and facial sweat go hand-in-hand.

You can try treating the problem before it occurs by drinking a lot of water and eating a healthy diet. Sometimes excessive sweat is a sign that the body isn’t hydrated enough. Drinking a lot of water will help lower your body temperature, which reduces the need to perspire.

If you have long hair, keep it away from the face as often as you can. The chemicals from shampoo and hairspray can irritate the face, and when your face is irritated, you will sweat more.

Be careful with the facial cleansing products you use. Not all of them will actually “cleanse” your pores. Use only cleansers, scrubs, astringents, and moisturizers that are made out of natural ingredients, such as witch hazel and aloe vera.

Make a homemade skincare mask out of natural ingredients. If you take good care of your skin and pores, you won’t sweat as much. Some ingredients you can use for a homemade facial include apple cider vinegar, aloe vera, lime, avocados, egg yolk, honey, and even aspirin (non-coated)!

Drink an herbal tea every day. Sage tea in particular is known to stop excessive sweating. It helps balance the two complimentary nervous systems – the parasympathetic and the sympathetic. When these two are balanced, they function properly, which results in less profusion and perspiration.

Use these tips to control excessive facial sweating! These might not “cure” the problem – but they will help to keep it at bay. You won’t have to worry about being embarrassed anymore!
