Where can I find a home or private test for Lyme disease?
My wife was bitten by a tick in Scotland a few months ago and has started to display the symptoms of Lymes disease; small circular circular lesion near site of bite, stiff neck and other joints, muscular aches, fatigue, night sweats and more. Our GP has pooh-poohed our self-diagnosis, won’t do a test and has prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs which aren’t relieving her symptoms. Rather than wait the time it will take to convince these boil-lancers that she is ill, we need to get this test. I know it is unreliable but we have to start somewhere & I fear the NHS will not be any help.
I understand your concern, but it is important not to get too upset with the Dr because he or she hasnt told you what you essentially wanted to hear going into the surgery! The reason they prescribe anti-inflammatorie first is to rule out other disease. It makes sense not to jump into the problem with both feet, which is what the Dr is doing. You also have to understand the symptoms you are describing could well just be the flu. My point is they are very non-specific symptoms as they crop up in a great number of diseases. Without having taken a proper history or examined your wife it is difficult for anyone other than the GP to tell what is exactly going on but given that Lyme disease usually has an onset 1-2 weeks after the bite, it seems unlikely for her to develop it a couple of months later.
Further more you have described no other skin lesions distant from the site of the inital bite. This skin change is charaterisitic of lyme disease.
Given all this, and the fact lyme disease is not very common in the UK, I would see it unlikely that she has lyme disease. Ok the anti-inflammatories may not be working but that does not mean its Lyme disease. Just because you have been bitten by a bug, does not mean you hve to develop it, there are lots of different ticks and the bacteria that cause lyme disease are commonest in ticks that reside in north america!!
I leave you with the thought that had your wife been unecessarily treated for lyme disease you would have been critical of the GP diving in head first!!
lastly, please please please even if your wife does have lyme disease (and im not saying its impossible just unlikely) dont get into the whole suing culture like that idiot is suggesting. Trust me, your GP has not done your a mis-service!
