Although panic attacks can be different for every person who experiences them, the general experience is usually quite similar between people. When you experience a panic attack you may suddenly feel terrified for no apparent reason. It may become difficult to catch your breath and you may find yourself sweating, feeling dizzy or trembling.

Many people experience heart palpitations or a pounding heart during a panic attack. Some also have feelings that the world is going to end or that they are going to die. It can feel like what you are experiencing or what is happening around you isn’t real.

Here’s a list of some of the most common symptoms of a panic attack:

  • Feeling Breathless
  • Feeling like your heart is pounding, racing or skipping
  • Chest pain
  • Sweating

  • Tingly or numb sensations in your body
  • Shaking or trembling
  • Dry mouth
  • Chills or hot flashes
  • An ongoing fear of certain situations
  • Feeling like you are going to die, the world is going to end or that what is happening around you isn’t real

Not all symptoms will be present for every person. Typically if you have more than 4 of these symptoms, though, chances are you had a panic attack. You should always check with a doctor to make sure.

Most people start getting panic attacks when they are in their teens or early 20′s, although they can occur at any age. Research has also shown that women tend to suffer from them more than men.

Panic attacks and anxiety can be treated and even eliminated. Common treatments include cognitive behavior therapy, drugs and self-help treatments for panic.

Self help programs usually involve reading books or using various internet programs designed to help you get over your panic attacks and get back to living normally. These programs are often just as effective or even more effective than other types of treatment and are generally much less expensive and don’t require you to take drugs that could lead to dependency or have harmful side effects.
