Ac Sweating
What is the correct way to start up a new AC unit?
I installed a new central ac unit.The electrical system is conected,thermostat conected,line set is sweated in.I can borrow a vacuum from a friend.Is the unit pre-charged.If so how do i open it up.And how do i vacuum it out?
First off I’m wondering how you obtained a new central a/c unit without having a a/c license?
That being said, I AM an a/c mechanic. Let me tell you what to do.
First off I hope you BRAZED the new a/c lines with a silver solder….. yes? okay. Now, 35 psi IS WAY TOO LOW of a pressure to test the system for leaks. How about 250 psi to 300 psi. Leave the nitrogen or air in the lines for at least 20 -30 mins to check for small leaks. Once your happy with your leak test, evacuate the air out of the lines with a vacuum pump. If you have a micron gauge, that would be best (this will read how much of a vacuum you have), a a/c system should be vacuumed down to at least 1000 microns (I prefer 500) to remove all moisture. If you don’t have a micron gauge, I would recommend leaving the vacuum pump running for at LEAST 2 hours (the longer the better) and be sure there is fresh oil in the pump (this makes a HUGE difference).
Once your satisfied with your vacuum, close all valves on the gauges and take off your pump while leaving the gauges hooked up to the a/c. Now you want to “crack” the LIQUID line of the a/c (the small one). Open the valve with an allen wrench and watch the red side of your gauges (what should be hooked up to the small line) once it goes above 0, close it again. NOW, remove your gauges from the a/c. What you just did was let a little ref. into the system without losing your vacuum or letting air into the system. Now continue opening both valves all the way. Your system is ready to go.
MAYBE…. How long is your copper line set? Check your instructions, if it is longer than 15 ft (might be different that’s why I said check your instructions) you may need to add ref.
